Understanding Pallet Construction
Learn about the components that make up a pallet
Top Deck Boards
The load-bearing surface where products are placed. Typically 5-7 boards depending on pallet size. Can be solid or have gaps for ventilation.
Usually 3/4" to 1" thick, 3.5" to 5.5" wide
Stringers/Blocks
Vertical supports that create the gap for forklift entry. Stringers are continuous boards; blocks are individual wooden cubes.
Stringers: 1.5" x 3.5" typical. Blocks: 3.5" x 3.5" x 3.5"
Bottom Deck Boards
Provide stability and distribute weight when stacking. Not all pallets have bottom decks; some have just bottom runners.
Usually 3-5 boards for stability
Lead Board
The end board on the top deck, often the first point of contact and most likely to be damaged.
Same dimension as other deck boards
Fasteners
Nails or screws that hold the pallet together. Quality pallets use ring-shank or spiral nails for better holding power.
Ring-shank nails provide 40% more holding power

Types of Pallets
Different construction styles for different applications
Stringer Pallets
2-way entry pallets using wooden boards (stringers) to support the deck. Most economical option and widely used in North America.
Pros:
- + Lower cost
- + Easy to repair
- + Widely available
- + Lighter weight
Cons:
- - Limited forklift access
- - Less durable under heavy loads
Block Pallets
4-way entry pallets using blocks to support the deck. Allows forklift access from all four sides.
Pros:
- + 4-way forklift access
- + More durable
- + Better for automation
- + Higher load capacity
Cons:
- - Higher cost
- - More complex repair
- - Heavier
Reversible Pallets
Pallets with identical top and bottom decks, allowing use on either side.
Pros:
- + Double the use life
- + Can be flipped
- + More versatile
Cons:
- - Heavier
- - More expensive
- - Less common
Double-Face Pallets
Pallets with top and bottom deck boards, but not reversible (different deck configurations).
Pros:
- + Stable stacking
- + Good for racking
- + Protects bottom products
Cons:
- - Heavier than single-face
- - More material cost
Single-Face Pallets
Pallets with deck boards on only one side. Lightest and most economical option.
Pros:
- + Lowest cost
- + Lightest weight
- + Nesting capability
Cons:
- - Cannot be double-stacked safely
- - Less stable
Wing Pallets
Pallets with deck boards extending beyond the stringers/blocks, creating "wings".
Pros:
- + Extra surface area
- + Better for odd-sized loads
- + Easier to strap
Cons:
- - Can snag on equipment
- - Not standard size
International Pallet Sizes
Standard sizes used in global logistics and export
| Region | Size | Name | ISO Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Europe | 1200mm x 800mm (47.24" x 31.50") | EUR Pallet (EPAL) | EUR1 | Most common in European markets, fits European trucks and containers |
| Europe | 1200mm x 1000mm (47.24" x 39.37") | ISO Pallet | EUR2 | International standard size, used globally |
| Australia | 1165mm x 1165mm (45.87" x 45.87") | Australian Standard | Australian Standard | Square format for Australian logistics and CHEP system |
| Asia | 1100mm x 1100mm (43.30" x 43.30") | Asia Standard | T11 | Common in Asian markets, fits Asian shipping containers |
| Japan | 1100mm x 1100mm (43.30" x 43.30") | JIS Pallet | T11 | Japanese Industrial Standard, predominant in Japan |

Export Requirements
For international shipping, pallets must be ISPM 15 compliant (heat-treated or fumigated). We offer heat-treated pallets that meet international phytosanitary standards.Contact us for export-ready pallets.
ISPM 15 Certification
Our heat-treated pallets are certified to ISPM 15 standards and bear the official IPPC stamp. Required for wood packaging materials in international trade to prevent pest introduction.
Understanding Load Capacity
Different load types affect how much weight a pallet can safely carry
Dynamic Load
Weight capacity when the pallet is being moved by a forklift or pallet jack. Most commonly referenced capacity.
Static Load
Weight capacity when the pallet is stationary on a flat surface. Typically 2x the dynamic load.
Racking Load
Weight capacity when stored on racking with only the edges supported. Lowest of the three capacities.
Important Safety Note
Load capacities assume evenly distributed weight. Concentrated loads or off-center weight significantly reduce safe capacity. When in doubt, use a lower capacity rating. Always inspect pallets before use and never exceed stated capacity.
